In principle some .bash* file could be used as well. However, those are
executed whenever you open a shell (or login shell). I.e. it will be run
even if you log in from tty1 or via ssh; it will also run multiple
times, if you open multiple xterms, konsoles, etc. I don't know, if this
will be a problem for unclutter or not, but I think it's best to use the
'desktop way' for desktop usage.

Last time I looked, it was started automatically by some script in
/etc/X11/.
