Why? Maybe thats part of your problem.

Firefox is packaged as iceweasel
Thunderbird is packaged as icedove

Have you tried "aptitude install iceweasel icedove"?

How would putting it in /opt be a problem?

The OP stated that he's not using Lenny. If he wants v3.x, getting it from
mozilla.org would be the easiest way.
