Default What are 'prefork: child states' ?

What do the following lines in my /var/log/messages file mean?

Nov 19 15:45:17 mnr check[6732]: prefork: child states: IIBBBK
Nov 19 15:45:20 mnr check[6732]: prefork: server reached --max-children setting, consider raising it
Nov 19 15:45:22 mnr check[6732]: prefork: child states: IIBBK
Nov 19 15:45:23 mnr check[6732]: prefork: child states: IIBK
