Default how to use TSSTcorp CD/DVDW SH-S182M under Debian

I've a Fedora box with a TSSTcorp CD/DVDW SH-S182M CD/DVD which works
nicely (/dev/sr0 via sr_mod I believe) but when I debootstrap Debian
etch 2.6.18-6-amd64 onto it and boot into that it fails to find the CD
drive, eg
mkb2@veri:~$ lsscsi
[0:0:0:0] disk ATA ST3500630NS 3.AE /dev/sda
[1:0:0:0] disk ATA ST3750640NS 3.AE /dev/sdb

Any ideas? Thanks, michael
