Acer Aspire 5315-2142: no audio
I initially installed etch 4.0r3 that ships with the 2.6.18 kernel.
That kernel doesn't support my NIC nor my audio hardware. I obtained
the source for the NIC drivers and manually built them. That worked fine
but I couldn't get it to detect my audio hardware. After fighting with
it for most of the weekend a friend suggested that I try out lenny and
the 2.6.24 kernel. That works fine for my NIC but still no audio. It
seems that it detects the hardware but... still no audio. Here is some
more information that may help diagnose the problem

You could try this:
. to /etc/modprobe.d/snd-hda-intel.modprobe I added
options snd-hda-intel model=ACER
2. to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base I added
options snd-hda-intel model=ACER
3. to /etc/modules I added
options snd-hda-intel model=ACER

*Thanks! That was just what I needed. What ended up working was adding the model=acer to /etc/modprobe.d/sound.
