Xorg - segfault

Hi!
I have a HP elitbook with a hd6470 video card. I' running a debian testing (amd64) system on it. I wanted to leave gnome, so i installed i3-twm. I had to install manually the X environment, and finally everything worked fine.*

Now, I'm stuck: i wanted, to generate a new Xorg file(trying to improve the touchpad), but a segfault error stops me from doing so, and I cannot figure out what could be the problem, or where should I start looking. I attach my Xorg log file, maybe someone can help me. I think that maybe vesa is causing the problems but I'm not sure.*

Xorg - segfault

Hi,

Hi!

Now, I'm stuck: i wanted, to generate a new Xorg file(trying to improve
the touchpad), but a segfault error stops me from doing so, and I cannot
figure out what could be the problem, or where should I start looking. I
attach my Xorg log file, maybe someone can help me. I think that maybe
vesa is causing the problems but I'm not sure.

...you disabled KMS? Maybe that's the problem. Not all GPU's will work
when KMS is disabled. I once had the same problem on an PC with an ATI
card. After i disabled KMS X didn't start any longer.

Nope, or i didnt know that i did it... I think it was a default setting. But the Xorg is up and running and seems like everything is okay, expect that it can't reconfigure himself. *How can I turn on KMS, or the better question: what's the easiest solution? (i saw a few posts, but it was like a heart surgery)

Yes, you are right. KMS should be enabled by default. But i noticed a
message in your Xorg.0.log file, that you posted:

Look at the directory "/etc/modeprobe.d". There is a file
"radeon-kms.conf" and it should contain the line "options radeon modeset=1".

You also need IMO the "radeon" driver for ATI
cards.(xserver-xorg-video-radeon)

Hi,
I checked them, but its all set. The modeset=1 line is there and the radeon driver is installed( but the xorg now in operation uses the fglrx driver). (but there is also the ati driver... )*

Look if your ATI Card is suppoerted by fglrx! Not all cards are
supported by this driver:

http://www2.ati.com/drivers/linux/linux_8.8.25.html

I recommend using the "radeon" driver. That means you must specify
this option in a manually generated "/etc/xorg.conf" file or, better,
delete the fglrx driver!

Am 17.03.2013 21:08, schrieb Boross Dávid:

I read that the fglrx driver is a little better optimized for my video
card, than the radeon - there were many issues with it, for example
overheating. So that shouldn't be a problem, furthermore it was still
installed, when I first run the Xorg -configure command. (i don't want
to modify the existing xorg configuration until I find a solution why
the configuration fails, because looking for answers without X is not
much fun :) so it will be only a plan Z until next weekend).
I read that maybe video drivers causes some problem because they load
before X starts - I start it directly with startx - or sg like that. I'm
not very into Xorg.. so everything count as clue.

If you have other tips, please carry on. :)

...only that i do not misunderstand you:

1. You run the command "X -configure" successfully and it created the
new config file /root/xorg.conf.new.

2. You run the command "X -config file /root/xorg.conf.new" command and
the "segmentationfault" happened which produced the Xorg.0.log file that
you posted?

3. Without this new xorg.conf file all runs well?

Is this right?

If so it's necessary that you post your new xorg.conf file which you
want to use.

When using the proprietary fglrx driver kernel-mode-setting must be
disabled. The driver should do this automatically during boot time.

Greetings

Dirk
