I do not agree, i. e. Googlearth it at least 10 times faster with the
fglrx driver.

I finally found the solution. I'm running kernel 2.6.23 because 2.6.20
to 2.6.22 does not recognize my battery (a well known bug). I've jsut
booted with the Debian kernel 2.6.22 and 3D apps run well with fglrx.

Well, it would also be nice if graphics vendors released working
drivers. I bought a HD2600XT card and wanted to bring it up working as
dualhead system. I invested a lot of hours compiling, patching,
configuring and had a lot of amusing effects - but still no success :-((
