Default how do i package a downloaded program

i have openoffice.org on cd from iso image.

i have google earth software from google to install.

how do i install these files. they are not packages and i cannot install it.

i am a newbee to linux. pls help before i go and buy windows. i also want
the basics. debian should make a basic file to help us on the how install
etc.

i know synatic package manager but it does not want to install.

Hi Darren,

You probably have the google earth software with the .bin extension. So, follow these steps to install it:

Turn the file executable with the command:
chmod +x GoogleEarthLinux.bin


After this, use the ./ prefix before the package name to run it:
./GoogleEarthLinux.bin

In your OpenOffice CD, you should have the .deb files to install it. Simply open a terminal and go to the directory where the .deb files are and type:

dpkg -i *.deb

To install the OO suite.
