I just tried the debian 2.6.25, I see similar behavior: 'mount' took 20
minutes to finish. I used the linux-image-2.6.25-2-686 package (version
2.6.25-3), which has this uname:

Linux approx 2.6.25-2-686 #1 SMP Wed May 14 16:42:03 UTC 2008 i686 GNU/Linux

I just noticed new information in the dmesg that is probably related:

$ dmesg | grep INFO
[ 2501.840262] INFO: task pdflush:178 blocked for more than 120 seconds.
[ 2632.815719] INFO: task pdflush:178 blocked for more than 120 seconds.

[ 3438.128290] INFO: task pdflush:178 blocked for more than 120 seconds.

So, roughly every 2 minutes the system reported that pdflush was hanging
for a while. The first INFO message happened at 8.13pm, while the
'mount' was running, as are the next few. The last one or two might
have occured after the 'mount' finished but I'm not sure.

Here is one of the entries:

Does this error still occur with more recent kernel versions?

Cheers,
Moritz

I have tried to reproduce it, but haven't seen the problem with recent
kernel versions (am running vanilla 2.6.27.4).
