in previous kernels that never caused a problem.

Default Bug#481063: linux-image-2.6.25-1-686: vga=791 gets 'undefined video mode number'

Sorry I did not submit this under linux-2.6

I compiled the vanilla 2.6.25.3 kernel from www.kernel.org and that boots OK with vga=791, so the problem resides somewhere within the Debian changes.

please enlighten us on the .config changes.

we are *not* carrying any fb specific patches.

The .config file is completely different because I don't need all the modules that Debian loads.
I attach it.
The only problem is that I get error messages at boot, after which all is normal:

FATAL: modprobe: Could not load /lib/modules/2.6.25.3/modules.dep No such file

Although depmod is in fact in /lib/modules/2.6.25.3

Other people have apparently run into the same vga prob.:

A workaround to the problem is to use uvesafb instead, specified here:

I get the same error with 2.6.26-1-686.

Yet no errors with the kernels from kernel.org.

So I had a thought: recompile the Debian kernel with the .config I use. Guess what: no error.

So Maximilian was right when he pointed to the .config differences.

It's in the .config somewhere.

Default Bug#481063: linux-image-2.6.25-1-686: vga=791 gets 'undefined video mode number'

I had the same problem, here is what worked for me:

apt-get install hwinfo

hwinfo --framebuffer

Look at the Mode lines, find the one I want:

Mode 0x0323: 1024x768 (+4096), 24 bits

convert 0323 from base 16 to base 10

put result into menu.lst kernel line:

vga=803

You don't need hwinfo to get the modes, you can set vga=ask and then convert the numbers you see to base 10.

HTH...

Indeed 'edd=off' fixes the problem. I wished I had checked back earlier, wasted another month with uvesafb.
I still wonder why I don't have to say 'edd=off' with my own rolled kernel to get vga-791 to work.

I'll close bug 481063.
Thanks for that solution!

Default Bug#481063: linux-image-2.6.25-1-686: vga=791 gets 'undefined video mode number'

I figured it out:
linux-image-2.6.26-1-686 has "CONFIG_EDD=m" set and I don't set that in my kernel.
