Default Bug#656196: kernel stalls every few days (rcu_sched_state detected stall on CPU x)

Hi,

Please keep in mind that these appear as emails in a crowded inbox,
so the subject line can be a good place to put valuable contet.

Thanks!

Earlier I asked about whether idle=mwait had any effect on this bug.
Did it?

Could you bisect through the kernels at

http://snapshot.debian.org/package/linux-2.6/

to find which is the first fixed one? That would help a lot in
isolating what change is likely to have fixed this, so we can apply
that change to wheezy and make sure it is applied to the upstream
3.2.y tree for other distributors, too.

Hope that helps,
Jonathan

Now I have been running the 3.2 kernel from testing for some days with
idle=mwait and i haven't seen the kernel stall anymore, looks good.
There is a call trace in the kernel log, though, with a message that
support for mwait will be removed soon.

Before I go on to test other kernels, one other possibility has appeared
to me: Maybe the 3.2 bug has been fixed through new CPU microcode? Is
that likely? Some days after installing the 3.4 kernel I noticed a
message about missing microcode and installed the relevant package. The
CPU/BIOS has version 0x01000086, the new version is 0x010000db. Should I
try if the error reappears when removing the microcode package?

If you have time, a quick check that you can still reproduce it,
keeping the microcode and without idle=mwait, would be nice.

Thanks,
Jonathan

Yes, I just reproduced the stall, with the current 3.2 kernel from
testing and microcode installed, see below.

Cheers

I have been running 3.3 rc6 for a couple of days now, no problems so
far.

Maybe related, maybe not. I am not reporting this as an ALSA bug since I
am still running 3.3rc6 from experimental, still without stalls, but
maybe this points to a reason for those 3.2 stalls: I have seen this
"canary starving" message with the stalls as well:
