What were the Linux versions before and after? (/var/log/dpkg.log*
might help.)

Please test without the nvidia driver. If it works, we can pass it to
the nvidia driver maintainers, and otherwise, we will be in much
better shape to investigate this or get help from upstream.

Thanks and hope that helps,
Jonathan

See below

Creating the file /etc/modprobe.d/bttv.conf
with this content:

softdep bttv post: drm
softdep bt878 post: drm

then update-grub2
resolves the problem. HTH!

This same problem happened on 3 other computers, none of which have
nvidia graphics cards, and it happened on this computer in exactly the
same way before loading the nvidia driver. In fact I thought since it
looked drm related perhaps going to the non-open driver might solve it,
but it changed nothing.

The other computers that had the problem were backend digital video
recording systems, old dell optiplex gx110 gx1p and gx200. No add-ins
save an DVICO bttv card and a ivtv hauppage 150 each. The all worked
fine for a couple years actually, then sooner or later after a reboot
they all failed in the exact same way -- the big difference was the
change to the boot screen appearance during startup, the 25x80 shifted
to the drm/kms and the bt878 died. I'm thinking i2c contention of some
sort.

That's a problem locating which linux image update created the issue
since reboots didn't necessarily follow updates-- six months between
updates and more between reboots was typical. I see the second attempt
to fix things with modprobe softdeps November 28th of last year (forcing
the bttv to depend on the ethernet driver, just because it loaded later
on. Some boots that worked, some boots that didn't. Putting it after
drm has made it work all the time on the xw6000). Related, the
problem appeared first around 2/19 or perhaps a few weeks earlier last
year, it was worked-around then with a drm/kms related modprobe option
i915-kms.conf: options i915 modeset=1

Here's a dmesg and lspci on a gx110 that worked for a long time, then
failed (not the hp xw6000 I reported about earlier with the same
problem). Attached is a tar of dpkg.log on a related system (gx1p).

Default Bug#657098: bttv dvb_bt8xx bt878 hang on boot unless post: drm

P.S.

Adding just these two lines to modprobe.conf

softdep bttv post: lirc
softdep dvb_bt8xx post: lirc

on the machine whose dmesg I just posted above that failed (gx110)

It worked! So clearly a race condition. Racing with what, I don't know.

With this working dmesg trace, to compare against the previous bad one
(same machine)

Thanks, this is very helpful.

Symptoms look similar to [2]. Richard, did you ever end up solving
that?

Harry, could you try a 3.x.y kernel from sid or wheezy? The only
packages you should need from outside squeeze in order to do so are
the kernel image itself, linux-base, and initramfs-tools.

Curious,
Jonathan

Hmm, good question. 8-)
AFAIK I've removed the bttv card from this workstation.
I can tell you more in a few days, I have currently no access to this machine.

After installing the above mentioned three from sid, details below, it
didn't hang (which maybe meant it worked, or maybe not, could be the
kernel change just changed the timing that wee little bit...). Anyhow
for a check I rebooted immediately after, choosing the previous kernel,
failure as before. dmesg and lsmod for each follows:

Excellent. I wonder if this was fixed by some patch in the area of
v2.6.35-rc2~7^2 (module: fix bne2 "gave up waiting for init of module
libcrc32c", 2010-06-05). If you have a chance to try
2.6.34-1~experimental.2 and 2.6.35~rc4-1~experimental.1 from
http://snapshot.debian.org to check that, that would be very useful.

Sincerely,
Jonathan

Just curious: did the fix stick? Did you get a chance to try any
older versions to narrow down the range to search for the fix?

I'm curious mostly because it would allow us to fix this in squeeze.
If it would be more convenient to have a patch against squeeze to test
instead[*], let me know and I'll see what I can find.

Thanks,
Jonathan

Owing to other pressures the next step for me is to set up a new box
just to debug this issue. I'll get to this by the end of the day Friday.

Thanks for your hard work and patience. Did you end up trying old
kernels to narrow down the range containing the fix, or setting up a
new test system?

Curious,
Jonathan
