Default Bug#597429: firefox often crashes whole system

# letting version tracking do its work
tags 597429 - squeeze
quit

Hi,

spamfang wrote:

Sorry for the slow response. This is

BUG_ON(!atomic_read(&bo->tbo.reserved));

Is it reproducible? There have been some ttm fixes in squeeze,
so it would be interesting to hear how a recent squeeze kernel
behaves.

If it isn't reproducible, we can declare victory --- great.
Otherwise, please test a kernel from sid or experimental as well;
the only packages from outside squeeze aside from the kernel
imaging itself that should be needed in order to do so are
linux-base and initramfs-tools.

If it is reproducible with a 3.x.y kernel, we can take this
upstream. If it is reproducible in squeeze but not in sid, then
we can try a few versions halfway between from snapshot.debian.org
to narrow down when the fix was introduced, to find patches to
try applying to squeeze.

Thanks and hope that helps,
Jonathan

Default Bug#597429: firefox often crashes whole system

I have done some thorough testing in the past days. And i can confirm that the bug is still present in 2.6.32, but ABSENT in 3.1.0.

I can reproduce the bug often.

Great. Which versions are the 2.6.32 version and 3.1.y version
you tested? You can get version numbers with

dpkg-query -W <package name>

from looking in the parentheses in "cat /proc/version" with a
running kernel, or by looking in /var/log/dpkg.log.

If you have time for it, could you also try a few versions halfway
between from <http://snapshot.debian.org/> to narrow down the search
for the patch introducing the fix?

Thanks much,
Jonathan

Thanks much. That includes v2.6.35-rc4, I assume.

Yes, I suppose a log from one of them would be useful.

Moving forward:

- Please also try getting a log from 2.6.32-40 with drm.debug=0x6 on
the kernel command line.

- Was this a regression? Do you remember any older kernel version
that worked? (Well, I'm guessing the problems started with KMS,
but it's worth knowing anyway.)

- Can you reproduce this without KMS activated? (I.e., "recovery mode"
with drm.modeset=0 on the kernel command line, and then starting
X with the "vesa" driver.)

- Can you reproduce it with KMS activated but without X? (I.e.,
ordinary "recovery mode" on the kernel command line; you might
need to run "modprobe radeon" to trigger symptoms, not sure if
it gets loaded automatically.)

- How about with KMS activated and the X fbdev driver instead of the
radeon driver?

- What is your userspace like? Please attach output from
"reportbug --template xserver-xorg-video-radeon" with an affected
version loaded.

- Any other weird symptoms or clues?

Hope that helps,
Jonathan

"drm.modeset" was just a typo on my part.

Thanks.

You'd log in in "recovery mode" so X doesn't get started, but with
modesetting enabled.

Then write a minimal /etc/X11/xorg.conf, as described at [1]:

Section "Device"
Identifier "Testing"
Driver "fbdev"
EndSection

And start X with "startx".

Ah, when Iceweasel or the system is frozen, is the system out of
memory (e.g., does "top" indicate so, and is there a noise of swapping
to disk)?

Thanks for the quick feedback. I'll chew on these logs and get back
to you.

The missing footnote:

Sorry for the noise.
