Was this a regression? What is the last kernel version you tried
that worked?

Can we take a peek at the relevant portion of syslog?

Please test v3.2-rc4 from experimental or a newer kernel. If it is
still reproducible, please write a summary of your findings to
ilw@linux.intel.com, cc-ing Wey-Yi Guy <wey-yi.w.guy@intel.com>,
linux-wireless@vger.kernel.org, linux-kernel@vger.kernel.org, and
either me or this bug log so we can track it.

Be sure to include:

- steps to reproduce and the resulting symptoms

- full "dmesg" output from booting the affected kernel and
reproducing trouble

- an event log from reproducing it without NetworkManager, if
possible[*]

- which kernel versions you've tested, and what happened with
each

- any other weird symptoms or observations

- a link to this bug log, in case the reader wants the full
story

Hope that helps,
Jonathan

Bug#651199: iwlwifi: Connection lost on "WPA: Group rekeying"

Hi!

I've now tested without NM and with the latest kernel from experimental.
As far as I can see in wpa_supplicant with full debug everything looks
normal during the group rekeying. But I lose the connection.

It works fine on the kernels in squeeze and squeeze-backports.

I cant find any relevant log messages from the driver.

To reproduce connect to WPA-TKIP and idle on the connection. At group
rekeying there is a good chance you will lose the connection. (You're
still connected but cant send any data trough).

Im testing with while sleep 10; do ping -c1 google.com > /dev/null ||
echo "failed `date`";done

BR,
Andreas

Package: linux-2.6
Version: 3.1.4-1
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

* What led up to the situation?

Nothing actually. I just wanted to try b43 driver which it is known to work
with BCM43224 at Linux Kernel 3.1. I just make an apt-get dist-upgrade on my
unstable Debian. However I had never tried to use b43 driver before.

* What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
ineffective)?
I try to load b43 and bcma driver to have wireless connection in this card:

03:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Broadcom Corporation BCM43224 802.11a/b/g/n
[14e4:4353] (rev 01)

I try to run this:
root@adrianworktop:~# modprobe -r brcmsmac
root@adrianworktop:~# modprobe -r b43
mroot@adrianworktop:~# modprobe -r bcma
root@adrianworktop:~# modprobe b43
root@adrianworktop:~# dmesg | grep b43

* What was the outcome of this action?
No response at all.
* What outcome did you expect instead?
I should something about b43 driver begin loaded I suppose. And being able to
use my wireless device.

Other system information:

After running this command:

root@adrianworktop:~# modinfo bcma
filename: /lib/modules/3.1.0-1-amd64/kernel/drivers/bcma/bcma.ko
license: GPL
description: Broadcom's specific AMBA driver
alias: pci:v000014E4d00004331sv*sd*bc*sc*i*
depends:
intree: Y
vermagic: 3.1.0-1-amd64 SMP mod_unload modversions

According to Zajec from bcm-users channel (freenode server):

someone just modified driver/bcma/host_pci.c and removed some entries from
bcma_pci_bridge_tbl .

So it would be nice if you could rescue these removed entries and put them
where they originally were.

Thanks.

Not even with "iw event -t"?

Bug#651199: iwlwifi: Connection lost on "WPA: Group rekeying"

This could be the same bug I am experiencing. Facts:
- 3.1 has it, 3.0 does not
- everything works fine while I am at home (WPA2 PSK)
- my connections break very often when I am at work (WEP)
- "wpa_cli reassociate" fixed the link
- "iw event -t" does not log anything when the link breaks
- I do not use NM, just plain wpa_supplicant

I am not 100% certain, but link loss appears to be perfectly correlated
with the "WPA: Group rekeying completed with (...) [GTK=TKIP]" messages
from wpa_supplicant in syslog.

What else can I do to debug this?

This may or may not be related to #649412.

I can confirm the bug, and there is no significant event displayed
(in fact, no event at all except scanning at unrelated times). The
only message is "WPA: Group rekeying" in syslog.

Best,

Thanks for a clear summary (and likewise, thanks to others for the
quick feedback).

There have been a few iwlwifi fixes upstream recently. Could you
try[1] v3.2-rc5 or later?

If it doesn't work, there are even newer patches to try in linville's
tree, but let's ignore that and pester upstream in that case.

Hope that helps,
Jonathan

I did not test 3.2 yet but for people looking for a workaround until a fix is
available, the following seems to work for me (found on openSUSE's bug report):
$ echo options iwlagn swcrypto=1 > /etc/modprobe.d/iwlagn

Bug#651199: iwlwifi: Connection lost on "WPA: Group rekeying"

I think I was a bit fast to cheer.

There is still problems but seem to be not as frequent.

Sometimes the link gets unusable after:
Dec 28 10:23:15 neith NetworkManager[1503]: <info> (wlan0): supplicant
connection state: completed -> group handshake
Dec 28 10:23:15 neith wpa_supplicant[1681]: WPA: Group rekeying
completed with 00:30:bd:9d:ad:6b [GTK=TKIP]
Dec 28 10:23:15 neith NetworkManager[1503]: <info> (wlan0): supplicant
connection state: group handshake -> completed

Best regards,
Andreas

I don't often use WPA, but that looks to me like successful rekeying.

Ben.
