Default Bug#598104: Toshiba Satellite C650: DSDT is borked (acpi errors, slow boot, wifi fails, etc)

Package: src:linux-2.6
Followup-For: Bug #598104

Jonathan,

I tried to follow instructions from handbook, but I have run into
unresolved dependencies problem:

#v+
$ aptitude -t stable build-dep linux-image-2.6.32-5-amd64
The following NEW packages will be installed:
cpp-4.3{a} gcc-4.3 gcc-4.3-base{a} libgmp3c2{a}
0 packages upgraded, 4 newly installed, 0 to remove and 225 not upgraded.
Need to get 6376 kB of archives. After unpacking 13.4 MB will be used.
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
libgcc1: Breaks: gcc-4.3 (< 4.3.6-1) but 4.3.5-4 is to be installed.
The following actions will resolve these dependencies:

Keep the following packages at their current version:
1) gcc-4.3 [Not Installed]

#v-

Unfortunately, I am unable to solve it myself. If I don't accept first
proposition from aptitude, the second is to remove some newer gcc-related
packages. Since this is my desktop box, I don't want to break something.

If you could provide me step-by-step guide for compiling stable kernel
on testing box, or somehow provide me .deb package of stable kernel with
patches applied, I could install it and check if it is working fine.

Best regards
Mirosław Zalewski

Install stable in a chroot or VM.

Ben.

Source and amd64 binaries for gcc-4.3 4.3.6-1 can be found here:
http://alioth.debian.org/~jrnieder-guest/gcc-4.3/

The source comes from [1], r5642.

One can check the integrity of the binaries using the signed .changes
file or by using the following sha1sums.

I think that I have environemnt suitable to compile patched kernel.

Unfortunately, there is error while compiling and I have no idea what to
do with it. I mean, I understand that there is uninitialized variable,
but I have never ever written anything in C and I have no idea how to
initialize it and where I should do that. I am attaching last commands I
tried and their output. Any help is appreciated.

My bad. The series I sent was incomplete and did not inclde the patch
69ec87efa8 (ACPICA: Add subsystem option to force copy of DSDT to
local memory, 2010-04-01), which is in squeeze (see bug#596709) but
not in the unpatched upstream kernel.

If you would like to test the patches against an upstream kernel
(which seems sensible enough), here are instructions:

1. apt-get install build-essential git-core

2. Fetch the 2.6.32.y longterm series:

git clone -o stable
git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux-stable.git
linux
cd linux

Or, if you already have a clone of linux-2.6.git:

cd ~/src/linux
git remote add -f stable
git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux-stable.git

3. Grab Debian's patches, too (to save the effort of a trivial
conflict-resolution in backporting one of the patches).

git remote add -f debian
git://git.debian.org/kernel/linux-2.6.git

4. Check out stable-2.6.32.y:

git checkout stable/linux-2.6.32.y

5. Apply patches:

# ACPICA: Add detection of corrupted/replaced DSDT
git cherry-pick -x 729df0f848da

# ACPICA: Add subsystem option to force copy of DSDT to local memory
# This one has a trivial conflict with another change. So you
# can use the upstream commit and fix it up by hand:
git cherry-pick -x 69ec87efa815
# Or re-use Ben's conflict resolution:
git reset --merge
git cherry-pick -x d65cf0ba0563

# ACPICA: Update DSDT copy/detection
git cherry-pick -x 43323cb4c4b6
# ACPI: add boot option acpi=copy_dsdt to fix corrupt DSDT
git cherry-pick -x aa2110cb1a75
# ACPI: fix early DSDT dmi check warnings on ia64
git cherry-pick -x cce4f632db20
# ACPI: invoke DSDT corruption workaround on all Toshiba Satellite
git cherry-pick -x 100cf87788c0

6. Build:

cp /boot/config-$(uname -r) .config
make localmodconfig; # minimal configuration
make deb-pkg

7. Test:

dpkg -i ../<name of package>
reboot

8. Report back on results, and kick me if it doesn't result in the
patches being passed on to stable@vger.kernel.org.

Thanks again, and sorry for the fuss.

Ah, this step should say

cp /boot/config-$(uname -r) .config
make localmodconfig; # minimal configuration
make all
fakeroot -u make deb-pkg

v2.6.33-rc1~37^2~9 (scripts/package: deb-pkg: use fakeroot if
available, 2009-11-24) et al which are not in 2.6.32.y had too much of
an effect on my muscle memory.

Hopefully the rest of the instructions are correct, though. Sorry for
the confusion.

Jonathan,

I have followed your instructions. Everything went without problems. It
seems that kernel booted both with and without acpi=copy_dsdt option
works exactly the same. WiFi is working, function key works, both cores
are available, Kwin with desktop effects works fine. No visible
problems, just as in 3.0 from testing.

Just in case, I attach dmesg from machine booted with and without acpi
option.

Hope that helps .

Best regards
Mirosław Zalewski

Nice to hear. Passed upstream.

Debian kernel team: please consider applying 100cf87788c0 (ACPI:
invoke DSDT corruption workaround on all Toshiba Satellite,
2010-09-28) to squeeze.

Thanks for your work.

Sincerely,
Jonathan

The 2.6.32.y tree doesn't have the prerequisite patches that are
already in squeeze and upstream doesn't want them (too invasive).

I've attached a patch against the squeeze branch, r18343, that does
that. Thoughts welcome, of course.

Jonathan
