I'm using ASUS G72-GX series laptop with debian testing and since following
transition:
[UPGRADE] linux-image-2.6-amd64 2.6.39+35.1 -> 3.0.0+39
experience regression:

1. Boot up into default gnome shell (very little modifications, using default
ALSA output)
2. Run some audiofile to ensure that playback is running
3. Plug in headphone jack into laptop

Result:
Audio is directed to both in-built speakers and headphones

Expected:
Audio from in-built speakers should be redirected to headphones

Several notes:
External mic properly mutes in-built one on current kernel version

Currently available list of options which control audio:
Headphone1 <checked>
Headphone2 <checked>
IEC958 <not checked>
IEC958 Default PCM <checked>

I tried to play with them and volume sliders. kernel doesn't expose even manual
control over output device muting (as it used to do long time ago in 2.6
kernel series, switching to automatic mode like i described few months before
the upgrade to 3.0)

line-out jacks per the headphone plug / unplug. For achieving this
and keeping the compatibility with the old behavior, the new mixer
enum "Auto-Mute Mode" is added. With this, user can control the
auto-mute behavior either disabled, speaker-only or lineout+speaker.

see any relevant recent changes).

Hi Jonathan,

I'm using gnome-volume-control mixer from package gnome-media 2.30.0-1,
screenshot with available switches and volume controls attached.

As for additional info - i will post it a bit later, applying your notes
to testing process + I’ll try more up-to-date gnome-media package set
from experimental, probably it includes capability to control behavior.

Should i post results here or direct them to alsa-project.org, or both?

I'd suggest testing using alsamixer from the alsa-utils package, since
that's under the umbrella of the ALSA project.

If the GNOME 2 mixer is no longer able to control automute for Realtek
codecs (and the same version of the mixer worked with earlier
kernels), that's a regression, and the kind folks at
alsa-devel@alsa-project.org should learn about it regardless of how
GNOME 3's behaves. So please report your results to the alsa team
(cc-ing Takashi Iwai and this bug log).
