Default Bug#639208: linux-image-3.0.0-1-amd64: Segfault everytime

Package: linux-2.6
Version: 3.0.0-2
Severity: important

First reported this bug several months ago. Apart from the advice to use a
different video driver (radeon instead of fglrx which doesn't help at all) I
have heard nothing. Nothing after the 2.6.32 kernel works here.

I can't trust reporting this bug running that kernel hence my report from the
only kernel that works here.

I can't unpack a compressed dvd (rar set from internet which unpacks fine under
2.6.32) is just one symptom.

Refer to my original bugreport #615397 but ignore the non-working youtube as
the newest 64bit flash plugin seems to work okay now.... All the rest applies.
I am stuck now on a kernel which is no longer in unstable and packages needing
to be held in dselect are mounting.; Thanks

Sorry we haven't been able to help you yet. Looking over the previous
report, it sounds like data is being corrupted between the hard drive
and memory. Normally I would think this was a hardware fault, but you
say that the system continues to work with the kernel from 'squeeze'.
So I suspect the hard drive interface is being set up wrongly in the
newer kernel version.

Can you send boot logs from the working kernel and the current kernel?

Ben.

I hope I posted the right files. I enabled bootlogd
in /etc/default/bootlog but the file /var/log/boot doesn't contain much
at all so I enclose the dmesg files of the 3.0 kernel (the one that
doesn't work) and the 2.6.32 kernel (the one that does work fine). If
these are the wrong files please point me in the right direction.

Thanks

Matthew

PS As far as I can see, the bug only appears after trying to unpack a
4GB rar set or use hellanzb for a length of time.

These are fine. The only difference I can see is that the pata_via and
sata_via drivers are loaded in the opposite order. They ought to work
in either order but this could possibly be related.

Please report this bug upstream at https://bugzilla.kernel.org under
product 'IO/Storage', component 'Serial ATA'. Let us know the bug
number or URL so we can track it.

Ben.

Bug now reported at kernel.org.
