Default Bug#629428: linux-image-2.6.32-5-686: rtl818x broken for RTL-8185 IEEE 802.11a/b/g

Package: linux-2.6
Version: 2.6.32-34squeeze1
Severity: normal

The card is identified correctly, but never manages to associate
with an AP.

The card is a generic rtl8185 cannibalised out of a Maplin HTC
PC bundle.

Dmesg self-explanatory.

Unfortunately the web site on sourceforge seems a bit blank so
I cannot pick up a more recent driver to test build to see
if this can be fixed.

Default Bug#629428: linux-image-2.6.32-5-686: rtl818x broken for RTL-8185 IEEE 802.11a/b/g

I have the same problem.
It appeared for the first time when I received
a security upgrade of kernel 2.6.32-31 that upgraded it
to 2.6.32-34squeeze1.
After this upgrade, my wireles doesn't work anymore.
Try to revert the upgrade, forcing the package "linux-image-2.6.32-5 ..... "
from version 2.6.31-34squeeze1 to version 2.6.32-31. It works for me.
BTW I'm looking for a better solution too, since 2.6.32 is an old kernel.

Default Bug#629428: linux-image-2.6.32-5-686: rtl818x broken for RTL-8185 IEEE 802.11a/b/g

Hi,

Same problem for me, using the rtl8180 module with a Trendnet 423PI
(with a rtl8185 chipset) mostly time out. Sometimes it associates with
the AP but the connexion is low, it drops randomly and it fails to
associate again. It is well described on Ubuntu :

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/290325

On 32bits platform, users usually fall back to ndiswrapper and stop
complaining. But on 64bits platform, the only solution for me was to use
the driver provided by Realtek :

It needs a little patch to build on 2.6.32 but works fine, and provide
WEP and WPA connection at a good rate.

I also want to point out this Realtek driver seems to be based on the
free http://rtl8180-sa2400.sourceforge.net/ driver.

It seems to me rtl8185 and rtl8180 are not realy compatible... Do you
think it is possible to merge the Realtek driver for 8185 chipsets into
the (Debian) kernel ?

Thanks,
Bertrand

But the Ubuntu bug you refer to shows the same problem with an RTL8180!
So I think this is nothing to do with differences between the two chips,
and is just a bug in the driver.

We don't add drivers unless they are part of the mainline Linux kernel.
And it seems to me that the rtl8180 driver should be able to work with
this hardware.

Please test whether this bug is fixed in Linux 2.6.39, currently
available in unstable.
