Default Bug#623535: linux-image-2.6.32-5-686: hibernation crash related to ttyACM on Dell 5550 HSPA card

My Dell Latitude 2120, with a Dell 5550 HSPA card[1], crashes on
resume from hibernation with the squeeze i386 686 kernel, but only if
before hibernation I used the HSPA card.

Steps to reproduce:
boot
press func-<radio mast>
run pppd debug call hspa
(which talks to /dev/ttyACM0)
check network is working
killlall pppd
pm-hibernate
boot again

Observed behaviour varies. In each case the system appears to load
the hibernation image from disk (for some reason I don't get a
progress display even if it's working). But after that it might:
- unexpectedly reset and go back to BIOS screen
- sit with a black screen doing nothing
- sort of resume but with an oops and then not shut down properly
(this happened once - see trace below)

If I don't use the ttyACM the problem doesn't arise. I'm not sure if
it's necessary to actually run pppd; it may be that simply connecting
to ttyACM0 with picocom is sufficient.

I tried
rmmod cdc_adm cdc_wdm
before hibernating but it still crashed.

[1] The Dell 5550 HSPA card is not available via Dell's website yet.
I was told by the salesperson who sold me the laptop (without an
operating system other than a FreeDOS CD thrown into the box) that
they are having difficulty with Windows certification. This might
mean that the card is buggy somehow of course. However, it does work:
I'm able to connect via my cellular provider and exchange data.

Default Bug#623535: linux-image-2.6.32-5-686: hibernation crash related to ttyACM on Dell 5550 HSPA card

In further testing:

* I have managed to reproduce the crash once without
touching /dev/ttyACM* or the related /dev/cdc-wdm*. That doesn't
rule out those drivers of course as they will run code during
hibernate/restore.

* I got another kernel oops, this time showing a stack trace related
to uhci_hcd (although I guess it's probably one of the individual
device drivers which is causing the trouble).

* However, I seem to have found a workaround: unload these modules
uhci-hcd cdc_acm cdc_wdm dell_laptop dcdbas tg3 brcm80211
by putting
SUSPEND_MODULES='uhci-hcd cdc_acm cdc_wdm dell_laptop dcdbas tg3 brcm80211'
in /etc/pm/config.d/local.

This has at the very least dramatically reduced the failure
probability. (Having kept a systematic record I now see that I
have had 3 out of 3 successful hibernate/resume cycles with these
modules being unloaded, compared to 1 out of 3 today without.
I will report again if I get another failure.)

I'd be happy to carry out experiments if you'd like to suggest any.

Default Bug#623535: linux-image-2.6.32-5-686: hibernation crash related to ttyACM on Dell 5550 HSPA card

I just got another oops, which doesn't seem to be obviously related,
but I don't think I should file another bug report.

This oops occurred after I had:
* switched from wifi to wired ethernet (^C on dhclient; ifconfig
wlan0 down; dhclient -d eth0)
* ran an apt-get

I see the battery state is mentioned in the trace. The machine has
been running on battery for some hours now. So I have included the
output of

taken some minutes after the oops.
