Default Bug#618319: linux-image-2.6.37-2-amd64: Framebuffer issues with RV620

Package: linux-2.6
Version: 2.6.37-2
Severity: normal

As soon as the kernel switches to framebuffer mode on 2.6.37-2-amd64 the
display becomes unrecoverably corrupted though everything appears to
continue to run fine and a reboot can be initiated. With 2.6.32-5-amd64
the display appears fine.

I notice that this system is using the radeon driver but does not have
the Radeon firmware installed. On older hardware the firmware is only
needed for 3D acceleration, but I suspect that other functions also
depend on it now. (And I've also seen some weird display glitches on a
fairly old Mac when the firmware was not installed.) So, try installing
firmware-linux-nonfree, if it doesn't offend your sensibilities.

Ben.

Once a job is fouled up, anything done to improve it makes it worse.

As well as upgrading to the new kernel I installed the firmware (since
the new kernel prompted for firmware for the video card which hadn't
been mentioned previously). Some combination of the two has resolved
the issue for me.
