Sorry, I'm having trouble understanding the exact nature of the
problem. So, quick recap:

You are using the rtl8192u driver from staging, if I understand correctly.
There was a regression in v2.6.39-rc1 that has been fixed in v3.0.3 (so the
fix will probably be in the next upload to squeeze) and probably is not
relevant here.

You are able to list networks ("ip link set wlan1 up && iw dev wlan1 scan")
but for some reason are not able to connect to one ("iw dev wlan1 connect
SMCnetfree"). No message appears in dmesg when you try.

Do I understand correctly? If so, please test a recent kernel (ideally
v3.1-rc2 or later from upstream[1]), get an iw event log[2], and
describe the symptoms to devel@driverdev.osuosl.org, cc-ing Larry
Finger <Larry.Finger@lwfinger.net> and 618279@bugs.debian.org.

Thanks, and sorry for the delay in responding,
Jonathan

Ping. Do you still have this hardware? Were you able to try the
tests described above?

Nowadays the 3.1 rc kernels are available from experimental[3] so
it should be possible to try this with a packaged kernel (no need to
roll your own).

In suspense,
Jonathan

Thanks, Jean Pierre; that's nice to hear. But have you been able to
try the Realtek RTL8188S (vendor 0bda, product 8171) that was originally
producing the problem?

Good to know. Claiming the bug so you won't be bothered by updates in
the future, and marking as unreproducible so heroes with that hardware
can know their testing will be appreciated.

It's possible v2.6.38-rc1~423^2~43 (Staging: rtl8192u: add missing
curly braces, 2010-12-10) fixes this. It's hard to check without
having the hardware to try. The driver in squeeze you were using is
rtl8192su, and that patch doesn't apply there.

Thanks a lot for your work,
Jonathan
