See bug #614221. You may be able to work around this by adding
'video=ofonly' to the kernel parameters.

That did the trick, thanks.
Is that what needs to be appended to kernels on PowerPC from now on?
Any other options I should expect?
Shouldn't there be some kind of a post-inst hook?
