This error concern the LSI SAS card (or maybe my disks), for the moment I don't see any incidence on my data (I will do backups more frequently )

Do you still have access to this machine, and if so, were you able to
get it to boot somehow?

The device name seems to come from page 7, which gives "pretty" names
to enclosure slots. Unfortunately, it looks like multiple slots have
the same name here.

Two possible bugs:

- maybe the kernel's confused, and multiple slots did not actually
have the same name;

- even if it is the hardware that is confused, this is not a very
graceful way to report that condition. It would be better to
make up a name to shelter kobject from the problem and to use an
error message that more precisely describes what happened.

Anyway, any changes in this direction will probably need to happen
upstream first, so the first step is to reproduce the problem with a
kernel that is closer to what they are working on. Please test
v2.6.39 or newer if possible (for example by using a wheezy d-i
image); if you have a working installation already, the only packages
from outside squeeze you should need in order to try it are the kernel
image itself, linux-base, and initramfs-tools.

Hopefully it reproduces the bug. So

Subject: ses: Handle non-unique element descriptors

Some SES devices give non-unique Element Descriptors as part of the
Element Descriptor diag page. Since we use these for creating sysfs
entries, they need to be unique. The specification doesn't require
these to be unique.

Hi Jonathan,

following the steps in your instruction I can reproduce the problem
(messages in

dmesg output) with kernel version 3.5.0-rc4+. The output for the test is
attached to this email as dmesg_3.5.0-rc4+.log. To be up to date I did the git
checkout and test this morning.

Afterwards I applied the patch and rebooted the system with the new
kernel. But
the system simply crashed. I was able to grab the output during the
boot process
with a serial console connection. The log is attached as
dmesg_3.5.0-rc4+_ses_crash.log.


In addition to this bug report I opened a service call at Fujitsu. As
reply they

send me a workaround:


Disable the "ses" ´module by doing

cat >/etc/modprobe.d/ses.conf <<EOF
install ses /bin/echo 'module ses disabled by configuration'
EOF


I made this modification and after the next reboot all messages in
dmesg output

are gone. I did this test with kernel version 3.2.0-0.bpo.2-amd64 from
squeeze-backports (please see file
dmesg_3.2.0-0.bpo.2-amd64_ses_deactivated.log).+
But it's also working with 3.5.0-rc4+. My guess is that the problem is
related to
kernel module ses. As I don't know what the ses module is used for in
the kernel

I'm not satisfied with this workaround.

Anything else I can do to help solving the problem?
