Small factual point here: we have MODULES=most configured, not
MODULES=dep.

Thanks; we'll have a think about whether applying my patch locally
or moving to squeeze's initramfs-tools suits our needs best.

no you are wrong here, just check with
egrep MODULES -r /etc/initramfs-tools/
otherwise the named code has zero effect.

for upgrade procedure it has allways to be possible for such
(ignoring udev special case, which we don't have directly in
our hands).
