If necessary I can setup a new virtual machine with a testing or unstable version.

Are you in position to try reproducing this with a machine using testing or unstable? There are chances that this is a problem in the cifs kernel module rather than client utilities. So, we also need to know the version of the kernel packages you're using....

Yes, please test this against with a testing/squeeze system inside a VM.
