Thanks, verified, will provide a fix.

The problem is the (lack of) wordsplitting of compress="lzop -9".

Yes, it is that simple.

I've submitted that already (as the pending tag I added to the
bugreport should tell), see

Will be fixed by upload of initramfs-tools >= 0.97.3.
