Default Bug#575681: xserver-xorg-video-radeon: shows severe artifacts since switching to KMS

thanks

Looking at the Mesa code confirmed my suspicion, the attached kernel
patch should fix it. Reassigning to the kernel.

Impressive, thank you very much!

I understood that and said this was unlikely: the artifacts looked to be
related to the rendering engine, and the display engine is generally
completely separate from that.

Fine, thanks for this explanation.

Does that mean you tested the patch and it works?

Not yet. I was just impressed by how quickly you were able to trace
the issue and provide a patch. Will try to test it within the next few
days.

Fabian

One gets lucky sometimes. :}

Great, thanks.

Dear Michel,

I tried the patch and can confirm that it works[*] and that it solves
the actual issue: No more artifacts in X for me. Thank you very much!

dmesg now shows the following line:

$ dmesg | grep -i pipe
[ 5.466112] [drm] radeon: 1 quad pipes, 1 Z pipes initialized.
[*] That is, I don't know which version of the kernel you used to create
the patch, but I had to slightly modify it a bit. The attached version
applies perfectly against version 2.6.32-10 in Debian.

Dear Kernel team, please apply this patch. Furthermore I think it should
get integrated upstream. Thank you very much again to all involved!

Cheers,
Fabian

My patch has landed in Dave Airlie's drm-linus tree and should make it
into 2.6.34 and hopefully also 2.6.33.y.

Thanks for testing, Fabian.

That's good news (finally, my graphics hardware is more than 7 years
old). However, I would love to also see this patch included in the
2.6.32 kernel that is going to be shipped with Debian squeeze.

Thanks for testing, Fabian.

It was an honour for me.

We've already using the DRM drivers from 2.6.33 and are picking up the
changes to DRM that go into 2.6.33.y. So we should get this sooner or
later. We can also cherry-pick it straight away, given the commit hash.

Ben.

It's 57b54ea6b7863ccfeb41851b5f58f9fd1b83c79e in drm-linus.
