Default Bug#575893: xserver-xorg-video-radeon: Occasional flickering

Yes, applying that (manually because some chunks fail to apply) to the
kernel's source package seems to fix the issue. Thanks you!

So it seems the problem is in the kernel and not the xorg video driver.

Rubidium

I've been a little bit premature about cheering it was fixed.

It occurs much more rarely, but it occasionally happens. I've had three
occurrences in 8 hours of use (instead of 3 or so a minute). One time a
cronjob just started updatedb, the other times I could not find any busy
application.

Default Bug#575893: xserver-xorg-video-radeon: Occasional flickering

The "new" 2.6.32-11 exhibits the same flickering behaviour as 2.6.32-10.

With the application "Eclipse" running in the foreground the flickering
is unbearable with 2.6.32-11 and 2.6.32-10 with the patch from
http://marc.info/?l=dri-devel&m=126996657723896&w=2 (I have not tested
the unpatched version but I assume it is unbearable there too).

Is there any newer patch I can try?

Regards,
Remko

Default Bug#575893: xserver-xorg-video-radeon: Occasional flickering

I've done more experimenting regarding this issue.

With the patch and "disp_priority=2" module parameter the glitching is
significantly reduced (though not completely). It makes my computer more
usable.

2.6.34-rc5 with "disp_priority=2" is (much) worse than
2.6.32-4_2.6.32-10 (with patch), however there seem to be many more
module parameters that might influence it which I have not tested. The
parameters are related to power management and when playing a bit with
http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/airlied/drm-2.6.git;a=shortlog;h=refs/heads/drm-radeon-testing
changing the "power_state" settings seemed to influence the frequency of
the glitches which would imply it has something to do with power management.

Anyhow, long story short: the patch is a big step in the right direction
for 2.6.32 and if it could be added to the "official" Debian kernel I
would be quite happy.

Default Bug#575893: xserver-xorg-video-radeon: Occasional flickering

After finding http://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=26358 I found
out that "new_pll=0" as radeon module parameter seems to fix the
problem. That is, I've been running with it for multiple days and have
not yet reproduced the flickering behaviour I had before.

Given the (freedesktop) bug report's state I assumed that the patches
would be applied to the upstream kernel, but I have not found a trace of
them in 2.6.34-rc5 yet. The lspci information for the video card is
identical to "dell studio 15" information, except that the IRQ is
different. I have not tried the actual patch, but as it seems to set the
new_pll setting to legacy for my video card I'm assuming it would fix
the problem.

Thanks for reporting it. I don't see any relevant changes since then
in squeeze. Some basic questions:

- can you reproduce it with the kernel from sid or experimental? (It
should be possible to test with initramfs-tools and linux-base from
sid or squeeze-backports.)

If it seems to be fixed in sid: do you remember / could you run a
quick bisection search using snapshot.debian.org to find which
kernel fixed it?

If it seems to be broken in sid:
- does adding radeon.new_pll=0 to the kernel command line help?
- any other known workarounds or other weird observations?
- could you report this upstream at bugs.freedesktop.org, product
DRI, component DRM/Radeon, with information about your hardware
(lspci -vnn, dmesg output, Xorg.log) and details about how to
reproduce it and let us know the bug number so we can track it?

Sorry for the long silence,
Jonathan
