Default Bug#572488: linux-image-2.6.33: fails to boot

Package: linux-2.6
Version: 2.6.33-1~experimental.2
Severity: important
File: linux-image-2.6.33

Hello,

I finally got a version of the package that configures so I tried
booting it - and it silently reboots a few seconds after the kernel is
loaded by grub.

Either there is nothing shown on the screen or I fail to notice anthing
that is possibly displayed.

The kernel is loaded by grub-efi so there might be issues with early
console, too.

Earlier kernels boot but 2.6.33-rc6 is first from the one I tried to
support KMS on this system.

can you get netconsole attached so that boot dmesg is seen?
see Documentation/networking/netconsole.txt in linux-2.6

otherwise asking you to report upstream is useless as there
is no clue in what is going wrong.

thanks

I somewhat doubt that the network drivers load at the point the kernel
reboots. They are compiled as modules and probably not present in the
initrd at all.

However, I tried to recycle the 2.6.33-rc6 config that works for me and
it works with the linux-source-2.6.33 as well.

Thanks

Michal

hmm what is the latest working offlicial debian linux image,
that works for you? Does the linux-image-2.6.32-3-686 boot on that box
(available in sid)?

I'm not sure, I was removing kernels recently due to lack of disk space.

I'm sure I patched 2.6.32 to make X work but I probably had to boot it
first to find out it is broken.

Thanks

Michal

I found the config change which breaks the kernel. A kernel which
differs from the official one only in this does boot, the official one
does not. I am quite sure there are no messages to see, this only
affects very early stages of boot as the build log after applying the
change shows only very few objects dealing with realmore are rebuilt.

Thanks

Michal

thanks for tracking that down, had guessed it was PCIEASPM,
which it wasn't.

this may well be a bios issue,
please check

cat /sys/devices/virtual/dmi/id/bios_version
or
cat /sys/devices/virtual/dmi/id/bios_date
and
cat /sys/devices/virtual/dmi/id/board_name

and see if there is a bios update available?

I don't have a BIOS, I'm booting from EFI.

AFAIK this is the latest version of the firmware.

bios_date: 10/12/06
bios_vendor: Apple Computer, Inc.
bios_version: MM11.88Z.0055.B08.0610121326
board_name: Mac-F4208EC8
board_vendor: Apple Computer, Inc.
board_version: PVT

Thanks

Michal

Ah, so your previous config diff was reversed. I understand now.
