Interestingly I can only find 2.6.32-5 on the web site
packages.debian.org.
I have got 2.6.32-6-686 installed on the machine - same problem
I can't seem to find a 2.6.32-2-686 (my amd64 is on -7)
http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian/pool/main/l/linux-2.6/ seems to have
only linux-image-2.6.32-1-686_2.6.32-6_i386.deb

There is no such package.

You are mixing up kernel ABI versions and package versions.
For Linux 2.6.32, the latest Debian package version is 7 (full version
2.6.32-7) with ABI version 2 (package names linux-image-2.6.32-2-*).
Debian package version 6 had ABI version 1. Debian package versions 1-5
had the ABI version 'trunk' indicating unstable ABI.
Ben.

sorry typo 2.6.32-2-686, what I was trying to say was that I have
-2-amd64 version and was looking for the -2-686 version

I was looking for the latest, so with
32-686 its 2.6.32-5

Thats what you have told me, guess I can't find it in the repos atleast
for -686 (nor by searching with packages.debian.org), although I have
seen the amd64 versions

That's correct; 2.6.32-7 had a serious bug and we requested that all
builds except for the first on amd64 should be rejected. For most other
architectures you should be able to install 2.6.32-6.
