macvtap allows simpler and more efficient host network configurations
for kvm guests.

(The patch is not yet upstream but it is expected to be merged as soon
as the next merge window is opened. If you want to wait then the bug can
serve as a reminder.)

Wrong URL, the right patches are:

and they have been merged in net-next-2.6 so maybe they can be pulled
sooner?
