Just for completeness, here are the steps I followed to compile
Ubuntu's radeon driver under Debian:

$ sudo aptitude install linux-source-2.6.32 linux-headers-2.6.32-trunk-686
$ sudo aptitude build-dep linux-source-2.6.32
$ sudo mount /dev/sda7 /mnt
$ grep Ubuntu /mnt/etc/issue
$ cp -a /mnt/usr/src/linux-source-2.6.31/drivers/gpu/drm/radeon ubunturadeon
$ cd ubunturadeon/
$ make -C /usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.32-trunk-686/ M=`pwd` modules
$ sudo insmod radeon.ko

Is that all with the same radeon dri driver (from libgl1-mesa-dri)?

Cheers,
Julien

I just want to mention that, despite my results, Julien may be on to
something when suspecting libgl1-mesa-dri. I notice that Ubuntu has a
bug reporting that this problem *does* affect Ubuntu/Karmic for users
with the ATI Radeon Mobility 7500. It is possible that it is just
chance that my Radeon 9200 works perfectly when using Ubuntu/Karmic.

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/mesa/+bug/474928

Also note that in that bug report they suggest downgrading
libgl1-mesa-dri as a workaround.
