Yes, I just installed the package directly from a mirror. I haven't
rebuilt it with any changed options.

Same here what?

Well, with both 2.6.26-x and 2.6.28 I am unable to boot my amd64
anymore. First my network card stopped working (e100), so I plugged* in
a rt8139too and now the e100 works but I get random kernel oops at boot
time, and I have seen what the original bug reporter describes also. A
lot of fun indeed. I have been reading other bug reports on this kernel
version and it looks dreadful. Sorry I can't provide more useful
information atm. I am away from the computer, the frustration (since
saturday night) has been too much to bear, and I am going through a
very hard personal time in RL. I just wanted to say /me too, without
getting too involved. That's all.

Bug#517193: linux-image-2.6.28-1-amd64 fails to boot on amd64

Hello,

I can confirm this bug.

2.6.28-1-amd64

hangs just after "Booting the kernel." with a blinking cursor as does a
compiled 2.6.28 with mith my .config even with a very minimalistic
config it does hang at the same point.

2.6.26 with my .config and 2.6.26-1-amd64 does fine.

Can you confirm whether this boot failure matches the bug filed upstream
as <http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=12520>? That bug has not
yet been fixed in a stable release but is believed to be fixed in Linux
2.6.29.

Ben.

For me, it's not the same bug. It stops at:
[...]
[0.3...] RAMDISK: Couldn't find valid Ram disk image starting at 0
List of all partitions:
No filesystem could mount root, tried:
Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown
block (8,3)

Dumping ftrace buffer:
ftrace buffer empty

For information,
linux-image-2.6.28-1-amd64_2.6.28-1~experimental.1~snapshot.12733_amd64.deb
worked.

can one of you guys please file that upstream in bugzilla.kernel.org
