reassign 509428 smbfs
thanks

Hmm, this has nothing to do with libsmbclient, rather smbfs

Bug #264943 in Launchpad, for Ubuntu 8.10, seems similar to this one.

I'm not entirely sure of this, though. That needs investigation and
re-reading that bug (which has a very long log and for which fixes are
already in 3.2.6, IIRC).

I prefer using the "important" severity here, to still allow the
3.2.5-2 packages to enter testing (we have enough good reasons for
this). Please don't re-upgrade the bug severity too early.

Default Bug#509428: bug#509428: libsmbclient: System freeze when accessing SAMBA/CIFS share on Network Appliances storage

I can unfortunately confirm this bug.

Apparently I've upgraded several packages before the Christmas break,
and from early this year my system started freezing and spontaneously
rebooting. No logs to be found.

I'm also not certain which package is the culprit ...

Yesterday I've upgraded several smb-related packages again (new
versions have become available over the weekend, apparently), but the
problems persist.

I've seen the same symptoms as described:
- directory listings cut short (from 130 to 148 entries so far)
- freezing or rebooting occurs when trying filename completion or
getting large directory listings.
- My initial reaction was thinking it was a hardware problem.
Installing Lenny on a brand new pc recreated the problem, however.

Hope this helps -- if I can be of more assistance let me know.

Default Bug#509428: Bug#509428: libsmbclient: System freeze when accessing SAMBA/CIFS share on Network Appliances storage

I can confirm this bug and have extra information.

I have 2 systems, both Vaio laptops, one with Xubuntu 8.04 and one with
Xubuntu 8.10.
Both systems are up to date and use the latest kernels and packages for
the distribution. Both setups are the same.

I can access a share on our netapp server from 8.04, but with 8.10 it
crashes once you do an ls -la in the directory one level down.

I found one other interesting thing related to this.

When I enter the top of the share with 8.04 I get permissions like:

drwxrwxrwx 3 root root 0 2007-01-25 13:04 .
drwxr-xr-x 43 user user 4096 2009-01-19 17:04 ..
drwxrwxrwx 17 root root 36864 2009-01-19 16:10 My Documents

When I do it with 8.10 the permissions are:

drwxrwxrwx 3 root root 0 2009-01-17 16:07 .
drwxr-xr-x 43 user user 4096 2009-01-19 13:06 ..
dr-xr-xr-x 17 root root 36864 2009-01-19 16:09 My Documents

It looks like the new version of mount.cifs is not able to share RW !.
And this causes things to crash when you enter that dir.

Antoin.
