Bug#504007: I have the exact same problem
 

On a desktop machine with AMD CPU, lilo bootloader, root partition is ext3.
Exact same problem. lilo completes normaly, kernel starts loading, lots
of dots, then at the point where

it should have displayed "BIOS check successful", nothing happens.

Previous version of 2.26.1 booted (I think - this is a server machine,
that does not get rebooted for every kernel upgrade. This time we
rebooted because we hooked up a new UPS). Currently we fixed that by
booting from the previous kernel, but that is a very bad option because
it doesn't allow unattended booting.
