Default Bug#493228: linux-2.6: Hiccups on amd64 when playing media

Package: linux-2.6
Version: > 2.6.23
Severity: normal

Hi,

Since updating the kernel to 2.6.24 I get some strange hiccups when
trying to play media files. They play fine for some time (random, but
usually after one hour or so) and then they stop. When I start typing or
moving the mouse they play on for as long as I provide some input. When
I stop, they hang as well. All media players are affected be it MPlayer
or Totem. Even GIF animations in Firefox stop moving when this is
happening.

I thought it might be caused by NO_HZ, but disabling and rebuilding did
not help. I am currently building a kernel with NO_HZ and
HIGH_RES_TIMERS off (#458312). I have tried various kernels (currently
2.6.25.13) and all seem to have this problem (building with the Debian
kernel settings).

regards,
Marek

Does this error still occur with more recent kernel versions?

Cheers,
Moritz

I haven't used the machine for multimedia lately but it seems that
2.6.26 does not have this issue (or much less then the older
kernels).

Marek
