I also have an i8042 chip. The reports seem to have all this in
common. I tried the few workarounds in the ubuntu thread posted to
noavail.

But after some more digging, I triedpassing i8042.nomux i8042.noloop
to the kernel command line and it fixed problem!

This should definitely be passed on to the maintainer of the i8042 driver.

can you please file upstream in bugzilla.kernel.org and let us
know the bug number.

The patch that fixes the problem for me was merged. It applies
cleanly on the debian tree. Would it be possible for you to pick it
up in the deb?
