2.6.25 from unstable should just install fine,
please report the error message you are seeing on boot.

please follow those instructions for debug

Does this error still occur with more recent kernel versions?

Seems I forgot to follow up on this report.

No, the problem is no longer occuring on newer kernels. Currently, the
machine is using 2.6.26-8 and is behaving fine.
