Default Bug#488284: linux-image-2.6.25-2-xen-686: kernel BUG at arch/x86/kernel/paravirt.c:241

Package: linux-image-2.6.25-2-xen-686
Version: 2.6.25-5
Severity: important

Hi,

Here's the console log of my first boot attempt under
xen-hypervisor-3.2-1-i386 (version 3.2.0-3~bpo4+2). The second
brought essentially the same result. The guest system is an
up to date Lenny, the host is Etch, the Xen hypervisor is from
backports.org. During the guest bootup it reports:

(XEN) traps.c:1946:d7 Domain attempted WRMSR 00000400 from 00000000:0000ffff to ffffffff:ffffffff.
(XEN) traps.c:1946:d7 Domain attempted WRMSR 00000404 from 00000000:00038000 to ffffffff:ffffffff.
(XEN) traps.c:1946:d7 Domain attempted WRMSR 00000408 from 00000000:00000080 to ffffffff:ffffffff.
(XEN) traps.c:1946:d7 Domain attempted WRMSR 0000040c from 00000000:0000007e to ffffffff:ffffffff.

Now the guest console log:

Default Bug#488284: linux-image-2.6.25-2-xen-686: kernel BUG at arch/x86/kernel/paravirt.c:241

Hi Ferenc,

This appears to have been seen a couple of times before:
http://www.kerneloops.org/raw.php?rawid=8416&msgid=http://mid.gmane.org/480CC04C.2020100@theshore.net
and
http://bugzilla.xensource.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=1248

in particular the later suggests that 2.6.26-rc2 is ok -- are you able
to test that kernel (or a later one)?

Ian.

Hi Ian,

I wgot linux-image-2.6.26-rc8-xen-686_2.6.26~rc8-1~experimental.1~snapshot.11752_i386.deb
and the corresponding modules, and the incriminated virtual machine
*booted up fine* with that. This is something which never happened
with the 2.6.25 kernels I tried, so this problem is probably fixed.
I'll keep running this kernel for a while and report if anything goes
wrong. I guess this bug can be closed now.

Thank you very much,
Feri.

thanks for the testing adding bug closure to changelog.
will be closed on upload of 2.6.26

good to see improvements in xen mainline support

Yes. Unfortunately I still can't save this domain. Xen 3.0 doesn't
even try (xend.log):
