as already discussed openvz is pushing actively on upstream
merge. it is thus a very safe bet on container technology.
as disscused on mailing list and with the release team it is a
wanted feature for the upcoming 2.6.26 release.
i'm preparing to add one openvz flavour to each x86 archs.
allowing our users to have precompiled openvz linux images.

If we're to choose one I would suggest mckinley. I think if we enable
it for itanium only we will quickly have users requesting it for
mckinley (since everything even remotely modern can run mckinley). I'd
expect there to be fewer, if any, users who would want to run it on
itanium. If there are any, I'm sure they'll let us know
