I'm using kdm.

Install kde-standard (or hal that it depends on).

What happens if you execute:

$ qdbus org.kde.ksmserver /KSMServer logout 0 0 0

?

Please reply on-list, there is nothing private in your mail.

Regarding your problem, if it does not work with 2.6.32-5-686 (both flavours,
not just bigmem), it's probably a fault of DRM inside the kernel. What's your
video card and what driver are you using? Try disabling desktop effects.

It's a kernel bug.

Hi, Sorry about the private reply--I intended to reply to the list.

My video card: VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RS880 [Radeon
HD 4200] (prog-if 00 [VGA controller]). I'm using the open-source radeon
driver, with non-free firmware. (3d acceleration isn't very good, but that's
another problem...)

I disabled desktop effects, but the problem remains for the bigmem and
2.6.32-5-686 kernels. Shutdown, restart, etc. work fine with the trunk kernel
in kde but not the other two kernels. Out of curiosity I installed gdm and
encountered the same problem. So I think you're right--it's not a kde problem
but a kernel bug.

After much searching I've solved my problem(s). I've been using the open-
source radeon driver, but apparently it wasn't being loaded in the proper
order at boot time, which resulted in a host of problems. Besides the shutdown
problems I mentioned above, desktop effects in kde didn't work well. The
solution: I added "radeon" (without the quotes) to /etc/modules. Now desktop
effects work; glxgears fps has more than doubled, and I can shutdown, restart,
etc. with both flavors of the 2.6.32-5-686 kernels--bigmem and regular.
