kdesktop_lock: not locking automatically, difficult to unlock

I am using lenny and the KDE that came with it (3.5.9 or 3.5.10, both
numbers show up in aptitude). I have 2 problems with the screen locking
function:
In the Control Center options for the Screen Saver I have activated
"Start automatically" and "Require password to stop" (after 6 min and 30
sec, respectively). But sometimes I can leave the computer running for
days and the screen does not lock. The locking functionality works fine
when invoked with the Lock/Logout Applet and when invoked with
Control-Alt-L.
Sometimes (but not always) when the screen is locked, I can more or less
enter the password: for every character I enter, one dot appears in the
password box. So far, so good. Now I press Return and nothing happens,
neither access nor "Unlocking failed". I have to click the "Unlock"
button with the mouse. Why does Return not do it?
