Hacking a screwed up 3C17701 (4924) from GNU/Linux

Hello Guys,

I have a bunch of 3Com SuperStack 3 Switch 4924 (3C17701) and one of
them was used at a customer which has gotten probems with there Sysadmin

Now gotten the Switch back and... I am fucked!

I can not use the switch anymore and it seems to be password protected.

Now, i the hope the Setings where cleared, I installed the 3Com Update
Utility under WINE and updated to the latest Firmware 4.22...

Fsck! -- I can not access the Switch, even if the 3Com Update Utility
has found the Switch on COM1.

Also I hae used NMAP to find the IP Address to access the Web-Interface
but failed.

Now contacting the crappy HP support (they have eaten 3Com) I can not
get any support, because the waranty runed out on october last year.

They do not even help me to recover the password...

This mean, a perfectly woking Switch for 5000 Euro is for the bin.

One thing is clear, I will never buy HP Products!

So, is there someone, which can help me to recover the Switch?

Oh, I have tried to install the 3Com Network Manager, but it complains
about a missing Winsock under WINE! Any help?

Thanks, Greetings and nice Day/Evening

Hi,

Have you tried the method described in the 2nd Part here: http://www.directron.com/faq3switches.html ? No idea if recovery has been disabled but if not it should work for you. Otherwise i guess you really need to return the Switch to HP to have them reset the Password :/

cheers,
Martin

Hello,
If you can connect to the serial console, just type recover as a login and recover as a password.
You now have 30 seconds to power off and power on the switch.
Then, it will ask you for a new admin password.

Hope this help, regards,
Igor.

Be sure you use the same serial line parameters, usually it's 115200 8N1, or 9600 8N1.
Then, check the path of the device, which default is /dev/ttyS0 on Linux.

Check there :

The most important thing is to start minicom with -s parameter to have the config menu.

Igor.

Can you coonect to anything else with minicom?

Have you checked all speeds - not just 9600?

Have you disabled flow control?

Andrew

Try screen with no flow controls. -L will log so you can share too. Incomplete example: screen /dev/ttyS0 115200,n,8,1 -L ...

Now gotten access to it, When I started minicom and let them wait for
the swtch to come up, I had to hit <ENTER> to se the login: prompt.

But now, the Webinterface does not more work...

If I am right, a fucking jacascipt check for the Netscape (!!!) version
and refuse anything which does not match. I have only the two frames
without content.

Thanks, Greetings and nice Day/Evening

Two possibly useful suggestions...

1) Firefox with User Agent Switcher plugin, define an appropriate
custom user agent string.

2) Opera's "View Source" function allows you to edit the page source
code and re-render the edited version. I have used this to bypass
javascript version checks that use inline scripts and it also
makes it possible to correct HTML which is not correctly rendered.
