I've no idea how to reduce a Java bug, but can you stick that
hsqldb-1.8.0.9.jar.4.jar file somewhere. Also, do you get any
preprocesed code when you add --save-temps to the cmd line? (I really
have no idea how gcj works.)

Thanks, I've forwarded that now. --save-temps doesn't seem to help.
