How/where could I make the above a lot shorter please.

Just for prompt ? If yes, just play with PS1 :

export PS1="u@myhost w"

If not I think you have to change your hostname, right ?

A) choose a shorter hostname

B) change your default prompt via an export PS1=.... in $HOME/.bashrc
