I find Gigabyte makes very high quality boards. If ever am I looking
for new hardware, I look for Gigabyte.

I find their BIOS second to none, and their compatibility out of the box
on all of my Linux machines.

2 cents at least,

ECC-Ram does not improve performance but reliability. There might be a
very small decrease in performace. But I care more about integrity.

Hi Basil,

I remember how difficult it was to get some information about the
motherboard before purchase, so I did some further testing for you on my
ASUS M4A89GTD Pro/USB3 motherboard.

I installed ubuntu 10.10 64bit and tested the sleep modes.
USB3 still disabled in the bios.
Suspend to RAM and Suspend to DISK both work.
With the open source radeon drivers. I didn't test the proprietary flgrx
drivers.
I am not sure if the suspend modes will still work when usb3 is enabled

Hi Franz

Thanks for those links. I didn't know that noises can create this much problems. But ECC RAMs are very costly :-( . When it comes to desktops, which will be having only less that 10 hours uptime, absence of ECC won't matter much , isn't it. Are you running those ECC RAM modules on server ? or on personal desktop ?

I am running these ECC Ram modules in a personal desktop. But I care a
lot about data integrity.
By the way Microsoft encouraged the use of ECC RAM when the launched Vista:
quote: "...He told TG Daily that Microsoft confirmed that it has found
out that a lot of "breakage" in Windows is caused by memory and that
"the problem with memory has to be resolved before Vista ships."

At first I thought that ECC Ram were costly, too. But then I discovered
this memory modules:
Kingston ValueRAM DIMM Kit 4GB PC3-1333 ECC CL9
At my local dealer the are available at 59€.

You will have to take very cheap non ECC-modules to beat that price.

I've just done a new build, and according to my son the lucky recipient
it's all working most beautifully including the compiz cube thingy that
I never use. He was just running an urban trials cycling film for me:-
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cj6ho1-G6tw
in 1080p mode and to me it looks every bit as good as broadcast TV on
his Samsung wide monitor.

The board I used is NOT integrated graphics but I thought it's as well
to let everybody else know of something good that works. It's the Asus
M4A79XTD EVO. I've gone for low energy consumption so I've only fitted
the Athlon II 240e but the performance is absolutely fine for his needs.
The graphics card is the Asus EAH4350 SILENT. Maverick recognises two
sound output channels - the analog channel on the motherboard and the
digital channel provided by the HDMI socket on the graphics card,
although we've only used the former.

I took advice given by this list and declined the invitation to install
proprietary graphics drivers.

I've fitted a 4GB kit of ECC memory from Crucial.

Default Best supported motherboard

Hi

Today I got my PC equipped with AMD Phenom X6 and ASUS M4A89GTD Pro/USB3 motherboard. I used the Powersupply bundled with the ATX cabin. It is a 250Watt one. Should I purchase a high end Power Supply Unit ?

Will the usage of bundled PSU damage the hardware components ?

PS : My PC don't have any additional GPU s attached to the motherboard.

Probably not, but you definitely want more power unless you like
brown-outs. I had an Athlon 64 X2 on a crappy old ECS motherboard
with 2 HDDs and 2 DVD burners, and my 450 watt power supply burned out
after about 6 months.

I recommend a minimum of 500w for that kind of configuration, more if
you have more hardware. I now run an Athlon II X4 with a crappy newer
ECS m/b, 4G RAM, 3 HDDs and 2 DVD burners with a 500w p/s and it's
been going nicely for over 2 years. (Uh oh, I guess I should start
looking for a replacement, just ine case.... :-)
