The last time I looked at it, it was labeled alpha and sucked the big one. Many basic features did not work at all (on Linux).

Dear list,

How can I benchmark the mysql server in debian squeeze box ?
Any tools in debian or any 3rd party shell script ?

The mysql is performing very bad and I need to boost its performance.
This is a new box with 8 GB RAM and i5 processor, dedicated for mysql
server... still this performance issue becomes my nightmare. Any help
is highly appreciated.

Thanks

Hello,
You can try to do a fine tunning with a perl script called mysql-test-run.pl
I don't remember if it comes with some package.
Good luck!

To get a good answer, you have to provide disk configuration.

The easiest way is and always was to install different OS'es on
different hard drives, and selecting media to boot with BIOS popup menu.
In addition, if default drive to boot has grub1 installed, it is rather
trivial to 'chainload' , i.e. to add entries in menu that invokes
bootloaders on other hard drives. In case you cannot accept such setup,
you have to do the same within single hard drive. There are several
problems this way, including : windows can be confused with some
partition schemes (strange enough, it sometimes can see only one primary
partition even if there are many) and windows always install it's
bootloader in master boot record, so you have to reboot into linux from
CD to restore your grub.

There is, however, another good setup for many cases: use virtualbox,
xen or other virtualisation software. With it you avoid headache of
messing with bootloaders and can easily wipe unneded installations.

As for me, I prefer grub1 for now as it is very easy to config, when
lilo is obsolete, though still in use and grub2 is very hard to setup.

Look at the advices of mysqltuner.
There's a Debian package for it.

Default mySQL workbench

Sadly, MySQL workbench doesn't appear to be available as a Debian
package, so I'm trying to build it from source.

Part way through the configure script, I get the error:
-----------------------------------------------------------------
checking for CAIRO... configure: error: Package requirements (cairo >=
1.5.12 gl) were not met:

No package 'gl' found
-----------------------------------------------------------------

I have libcairo2-dev installed.

Has anyone here any experience of building mySQL workbench?
Has anyone any suggestions for overcoming this problem?

Cheers, Tony

There's a deb file available upstream. Did you try with that?

It seems to be "cairo" that requires "gl" so check also for the existance
of the "libglib2.0-0" package.

FWIW, "dpkg -S gl.pc" tells me the missing file is in libgl1-mesa-dev.

Wonderful, thank you Sven. That fixed it!

Lucky you that can read between the lines ;-)

To be sincere, from the given error message I can't decipher what's the
required file.
