I have no problem getting Firefox to use Kmail. Have you tried setting
your preferred applications? Run
/usr/bin/gnome-default-applications-properties

You mean *desktop* manager. *Window* managers would not have anything
to do with something like that. *I* don't use a desktop manager (I
don't use gnome or kde).

Preferences.

In any event, evolution certainly isn't hardcoded.
