check your /etc/X11/xorg.conf on the differents machines.
-> RgbPath "/usr/share/X11/rgb"


It was different between the two machines...

On the machine that worked the RgbPath was not specified.
It was specified on the machine that did not work...
I commented it out and rebooted and it started working.
