Default Installation of a second kernel failed

because of problems that may occur of the
2.6.21-1-multimedia-amd64-kernel I first tried to install
kernel-image-2.6-amd64-k8-smp (1:2.6.18+6etch3) and after that
kernel-image-2.6-amd64-generic (1:2.6.18+6etch3).
Synaptic said that the kernels have been installed, but in /boot there
has been only the multimedia-kernel.

I need a second kernel, e.g. to make tests with the proprietary ATI
driver. Using it with the multimedia-kernel and my ASUS M2A-VM HDMI,
with integrated ATI Radeon X1250-based graphics and an 15.107.2 "AMD
Athlon(tm) X2 Dual Core Processor BE-2350" 2,1GHz, the screen is black.
